Typical Signs of a Defective USB Drive

USB drives are among the most commonly used portable storage media. Frequent plugging and unplugging, mechanical stress, and limited write cycles of flash cells can cause various defects. The symptoms differ considerably from those of other storage devices.
USB Drive Not Recognized
The most common problem is that the USB drive is not recognized when plugged in:
- No drive letter appears in the file manager
- Windows plays the "Device connected" sound but shows no drive
- USB drive appears in Disk Management without capacity information
- Error message "USB device not recognized"
Capacity Shows 0 Bytes or Incorrect Value
If the USB drive is recognized but shows a capacity of 0 bytes or an unrealistically small/large value, the NAND flash memory or the firmware table (FTL) is often damaged. This symptom indicates a severe internal defect.
Broken or Bent Connector
Mechanical damage to the USB connector is very common:
- Connector is broken off or severely bent
- Connector wobbles in the USB port and loses contact
- Solder joints on the board are cracked
- Board is broken or has visible cracks
Formatting Prompt and RAW File System
- Computer prompts for formatting: "You need to format the disk before you can use it"
- File system is displayed as "RAW" instead of FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS
- Access to stored files is no longer possible
Additional Warning Signs
- Files disappear after copying or are corrupted
- USB drive becomes extremely hot when plugged in
- Write operations fail repeatedly
- LED on the USB drive no longer blinks or stays on permanently
