SSD not recognized - Causes and solutions

SSD Not Recognized: What to Do?

An SSD is not always defective if it is not recognized by Windows during system startup (booting). Before you panic and commission an SSD data recovery to rescue files that may not be backed up, first try the following steps to get the SSD working again. Tip upfront: A freshly installed SSD must first be initialized.

An SSD is not always defective if it is not recognized by Windows during system startup (booting). Before you panic and commission an SSD data recovery to rescue files that may not be backed up, first try the following steps to get the SSD working again. Tip upfront: A freshly installed SSD must first be initialized.

Step 1: Check Cables and Connectors

  1. Was the SSD installed correctly, and are the data and power cables firmly seated on the correct connectors?
  2. If the connectors are correct, try a different SATA port on the computer's motherboard. Sometimes the port is defective.
  3. If the SSD is still not recognized, swap the cables to rule out a defect (e.g., loose connection).

Step 2: Update the BIOS

  1. Make sure the latest BIOS update for the motherboard is installed.
  2. Updates can often be installed directly through the BIOS interface in the Tools menu.
  3. Alternatively, you can download the update files for your version number from the manufacturer's website onto a USB drive and select the USB drive as the storage location in the BIOS tool. A boot medium is not required.

Step 3: Disable AHCI Mode in the BIOS

Professional diagnosis and analysis of a storage device
  1. The AHCI mode (AHCI = Advanced Host Controller Interface) is designed to ensure smooth cooperation between the system and SATA controllers. In some cases, however, this does not work (especially with older motherboards) and causes the SSD not to be recognized.
  2. To do this, open the BIOS and set the AHCI mode to "Disabled" or "Off".
  3. Then restart the PC. If the hard drive is still not recognized, a defect can no longer be ruled out. Also check the symptoms of a defective SSD.

New SSD: Assign Drive Letter and Initialize

  1. New hard drives are recognized by the system, but the drive letter is missing. This must first be assigned.
  2. To do this, open Disk Management in Windows (Create and format hard disk partitions) and right-click on the SSD hard drive.
  3. In the context menu, select "Change Drive Letter and Paths...".
  4. Now click "Add", select the option "Assign the following drive letter", and confirm the process by clicking "OK".

A Dialog Box Opens When Starting Disk Management?

  1. If you are asked about the partition style, select "GPT" for storage devices of 2 terabytes or more. In principle, you can accept the default settings.
  2. The unallocated hard drive is displayed with a black bar. Here too, open the context menu by right-clicking on the hard drive.
  3. Now select "New Simple Volume..." and confirm twice with "Next".
  4. Now assign a drive letter and format the SSD hard drive.

External SSD Not Recognized?

If your HDD hard drive is not recognized, our separate guide provides additional help. If it is not a built-in SSD but an external SSD (with USB connection), please also check all connectors and cables first. In other words: switch the USB port, swap the cable, and ensure the power supply via a power adapter.

If the external SSD is displayed in Disk Management, you can assign a drive letter and initialize the hard drive here just as you would with an internal SSD.
