Card Reader, Adapter and Port

The most trivial cause is also the most common: the reading device does not match the card. Older card readers do not support SDXC (cards from 64 GB) and therefore no exFAT either. Laptop slots often hang on an internal USB hub with a tight power supply. And microSD-to-SD adapters are the most frequently defective components in the entire chain – a single bent spring contact is enough for the microSD card to no longer be displayed.

File System and Compatibility

  • exFAT on older devices: many cameras, TVs and car radios cannot read exFAT. The SD card is fine, the device just cannot do anything with the file system.
  • Android card formatted as “internal storage”: the phone then encrypts the microSD card bound to the device. In any other device and on any computer it appears empty or unknown. Caution: after a factory reset of the smartphone the key is gone – and with it the files, irretrievably.

Every SD card contains a small controller that manages the memory cells. If it fails or its internal management table gets scrambled, the card no longer reports at all, reports the wrong capacity or shows as “No media”.   5. Test on a second computer or Mac. If two different systems do not recognize the card, the fault is most likely in the card itself.

Drive Letter Missing? Reading Disk Management Correctly

Sometimes the SD card is recognized by the operating system but not shown in Explorer – because Windows has not assigned a drive letter. This is how you check it safely:

  1. Right-click the Start button → select “Disk Management” from the menu.
  2. In the lower part of the window, look for the removable drive with the size of your SD card.
  3. If an intact file system (FAT32/exFAT) without a drive letter is displayed there: right-click the drive → “Change Drive Letter and Paths” → “Add” → confirm with OK. This changes nothing on the content of the card.
  4. If instead it says “RAW”, a wrong capacity or “No media”: change nothing, do not confirm any initialisation – from here on, the rules from the warning below apply.

Do not format, do not have it “repaired”. On memory cards, every write access is final: the controller immediately releases freed memory areas for reuse. What is overwritten after that, no lab can restore. Therefore also decline the “Fix” offer on Android, “Scan and fix” on Windows and the camera's format prompt – and stay away from chkdsk: the command from the command prompt can irretrievably discard file system entries on a struggling SD card. A quick format is equally off-limits.

The following sequence is structured so that every step puts less strain on the SD card than a write access. Stop as soon as the card shows up with the wrong capacity or as “No media” – a controller defect is then likely, and every further power-up costs chances.

  • Phone / smartphone (Android): open Settings under “Storage” and check whether the microSD card is displayed there.
