Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) advises customers to immediately install the new HPD8 firmware on their servers. The reason: numerous SAS SSDs suffer a complete failure with data loss after exactly 32,768 hours. This corresponds to approximately 4 years (precisely: three years, 270 days, and eight hours). The cause is a problem in the old firmware.
No Access to Data on HPE SSD

Affected are HPE SAS SSDs with a firmware version prior to HPD8. A complete list of the affected SSDs is available on the manufacturer's website. HPE also provides flash tools there for performing the firmware update to HPD8. According to the manufacturer, a server restart is not necessary if the affected SSD is connected to a SAS controller.
The affected SSDs were also used by HPE in server and storage systems, including RAID arrays. These include:
- Apollo systems
- ProLiant systems
- Synergy systems
- JBoD D3xxx
- D6xxx
- D8xxx
- MSA SAN storage
- StoreVirtual 4335
- StoreVirtual 3200
TIP: Check Operating Hours
The operating hours of the SSDs can be read using the Smart Storage Analyser. HPE has published detailed instructions in the support section.
